Basic Information on Studying Abroad in Japan
University Application Requirements
1. Possess at least 12 years of basic education.
2. Must be at least 18 years old before enrolment.
3. [Examination for Studying Abroad in Japan: EJU] Japanese: 200 points or more + Other related subjects
4. Having learnt the Japanese Language for 6 – 12 months
*Some universities do not require any knowledge of the Japanese language.
Scholarship
According to the Exchange rate: RM1= JPY25
Based on various research conducted by the Japanese government from 589 Private Universities, 90 Union Universities and 86 Public Universities:
1. The average costs (including tuition fees and living expenses) for an international student: JPY1.68 million (RM67,000/year).
2. Yearly tuition fees:
– National Public University – JPY540,000;
– Private University – JPY780,000 – 1.8 million.
3.Monthly living expenses (City): JPY88,000 (RM3,500/month)
– Inclusive of Dormitory: JPY37,000;
– Food: JPY27,000;
– Transportation/Utility Bills: JPY15,000.
Financial Aid for International Students
Tuition Fees Waiver
Japanese universities have a tuition waiver system, which provides waived tuition fees in different proportions and amounts for international students. Some universities also waive the tuition fees in half or full amounts.
Scholarships
There are 100 types of governmental/non-governmental scholarships opened for more than 15,000 candidates for international students studying in universities to apply for. Every year, approximately 60% of international students are able to obtain a scholarship. The amount is 48,000-180,000 yen a month.
Part-Time Job Opportunities
The Japanese government allows international students to work part-time while studying. There is a wide range of job opportunities with high income. You can work 28 hours a week, and 8 hours a day during the holidays. You get paid 1,000-1,500 yen per hour, with a monthly income of up to 120,000-180,000 yen (which equals to RM4,500/month).
Prospects for International Students
Employment in Japan
According to the Japanese government’s statistical data, the employment rate of an university graduate who is an international student is 41.7%, and the rate of taking a Master’s Degree is 18.2%.
1. Career fairs will be held for Japanese university students a year or two before their graduation. More than 70% of the students will be able to find a job a year before their graduation.
2. There are many good Japanese enterprises that only hire recent graduates. They do not evaluate a person by their working experiences, but their potential, ability and character.
3. 2-3 years of planned and long-term training are conducted for new employees.
Immigration to Japan
The Japanese government launched a new immigration program in 2017. People who graduated and are employed in Japan can apply for permanent residence in Japan within a year, provided that they meet 70% of the program requirements. However, even if you do not have a Japanese nationality, being a residence visa holder of 3 months and above (student visa is usually valid for 1-4 years) can also allow you to enjoy the same benefits as a
Japanese citizen. This is something very unique in comparison to studying abroad in other countries.
